Learning Outcome 1:
Formulate, describe and implement a challenging and self-directed programme of study, relating to your Study Statement.
(Assessment Criteria: Enquiry)

My intent is to expand my pre-existing practice of communicating my psychosis through my paintings by incorporating the surrealist art-making method, psychic automatism.

My Study Statement has been invaluable in providing perspective on my work and guiding me toward developing this approach into a more substantial and sustainable form of therapy.

STUDY STATEMENT

It serves as a comprehensive guide for deepening my practice through extended research, experimentation, and varied methodologies, outlining how I will continue to implement a self-directed programme of study.

Below I have provided curated blog posts that I believe indicate ample evidence for Learning outcome 1.

‘psychosis; studies’ - Exploring how current practicing artists are integrating psychosis into their practice.

‘books!’ - Searching for new perspectives by exploring bookshops, discovering new and unfamiliar artists, uncovering insights that could help shape and develop my research and practice.

‘breton & freud’ - Revisiting key influences to find new possible directions for my MA.

‘the beauty in psychosis’ - Researching further into Surrealist Artists inspired by The Surrealist Manifesto and their connection to psychosis.

‘my mate pete’ - Reviewing and reflecting on a previous conversation I had with psychoanalyst Peter Dobey and expanding on the information and insights he shared for my current research.

Learning Outcome 2:
Implement appropriate working methods for building an independent and effective self-organisation that enables the critical engagement with practice-based research.
(Assessment Criteria: Process)

So far in this course, I have developed an independent working structure that supports my research through experimentation. This allows me to continually refine my practice and critically engage with my work, keeping it dynamic and ever-evolving throughout my MA.

Below I have provided curated blog posts that I believe indicate good evidence for Learning outcome 2.

‘automatic writing’ - Experimentation with techniques used by Andre Breton and Sigmund Freud.

‘automatic writing on paintings’ - Exploration into developing pieces of automatic writing into paintings.

‘even more development’

‘first canvas in a while’

‘paper works 13th’ - Paintings that I had continued to develop after my 1-2-1 with Jonathan, aswell as my open questions tutorial with artists on the course.

‘canvas updates’ - A continuation of developing my paintings, based on the reflection I did after my second 1-2-1 with Jonathan.

Learning Outcome 3:
Communicate a critical understanding of your developing practice.
(Assessment Criteria: Knowledge, Communication)

With my work acting as a form of catharsis, reflection and critical understanding is inherent in my practice. Throughout my MA so far, I’ve been able to engage in group sessions and 1-2-1 tutorials. These environments proved to be crucial in fostering a safe, proactive critical environment where I am able to reflect on my developing practice and gather insightful perspectives from my cohorts.

Below I have provided curated blog posts that I believe indicate satisfactory evidence for Learning outcome 3.

‘1-2-1 with jonathan’

‘second 1-2-1 with jonathan’

‘a bunch of works - open questions tutorial’

In addition, I want to focus on previously mentioned blog posts in LO1 & LO2, as the posts either include a great amount of critical reflection or were a result of critical reflection and understanding, specifically;

FEEDBACK:

  1. Based on my Study Statement, how can I further develop my current practice to better align with my working title? Do you have any recommendations for improvement?

  2. Do you have any recommendations to any Artists/Academics that can support me in expanding my current Bibliography?
